Sony hates early adopters

My PSP, which I bought during a visit to E3 Expo at Los Angeles last May, has developed a control problem in which either the analog or d-pad sticks right, turning by itself intermittently, but frequently. No biggie, I thought; surely this is a problem covered by the warranty. Apparently not.
Sony, in their great wisdom and love of fan base and early adopters, has decided that a feature they've been known for in the past - the international warranty, does not apply to the PlayStation product line. How this makes sense for a portable game platform with a large traveling user base is not immediately clear to me.
